Seniors Struggle with Shortened Schedule First week of School

by Staff

The first week of school is a week full of emotions, whether you’re excited to jump back in or dreading the early  mornings. Although adjusting back to the unpleasant schedule makes the first week of school especially rough, there’s a bright light at the end of the tunnel for some fellow seniors: the opportunity to receive a shortened schedule. Shortened schedules bestow the most burnt out seniors, with a shorter school day to lift their spirits and get them through their final year!

Although receiving the luxury of a shortened schedule is one of the greatest feelings in life, the process of getting one is not so great. The process of getting a shortened schedule includes applying to DVC and dealing with their confusing systems of enrollment. This task of applying, being accepted, and registering is something that plagues the first week of school for seniors causing stress and unhappiness surrounding the idea of school in general.

Once this process is complete, school schedules must be switched around, in many cases seniors will get a whole new set of classes, this can be a bit inconvenient for students who have just begun to settle into their classes. In order to gain a better perspective on this situation as a whole I’ve asked a fellow student, Joey Garcia for their input on how their first week of school went while juggling the DVC process.

Q: How complex was the application process for you?

The process was lengthy, with a lot of steps which I didn’t know how to do and I had to request help from a lot of different people.

Q: How could our school make this process easier?

If the school provided upcoming seniors with all of the information and resources in order to do this I could have completed it a lot sooner and easier, but I had to go through it on my own and do a lot of complicated research.

Q: Why do you think a shortened schedule is beneficial for students?

A shortened schedule is beneficial for students  who work or have other extracurriculars after school in which they need more time to complete school work or need the chance to reduce stress with the amount.

Q: What is one suggestion you would give an upcoming senior who wants to have a shortened schedule?

Get the first step out of the way and create a DVC account and research classes you may want to take the upcoming semester.

With the first week of school wrapped up, senior students are now settling into their new routines and responsibilities as well as enjoying the privilege of a shortened school day, with hopes of an easier process for future students!
