Top Five Mobile Games for When Your Internet Sucks

By Sevanah Sandoval

You’re on a road trip, and your car is traveling through the middle of nowhere. You have hours ahead of you, and need to find a way to entertain yourself. But, when you try to open the apps on your phone, you realize that none work without Wi-Fi!

To save you from this perilous predicament of perpetual boredom, I’ve compiled a list of the best mobile games to play when you don’t have Wi-Fi.

5. I Want Watermelon

I Want Watermelon is a merge game where you drop fruits of different sizes and varieties onto your screen. It is similar to 2048, as you try to join matching fruits together when you drop them to make bigger fruits. Be careful, however, because if your stack of fruits gets too high, your game will end.

This game is simple and can be played by anyone. The gameplay is paired with a palette of soft colors and whimsical music. Not only is this a great choice for when your Internet is compromised, but because there are no in-app purchases, it’s a safe option for the next time a kid asks you, “Do you have games on your phone?”

4. Stack

Stack is another simple game with aesthetically pleasing colors and sounds as you stack bricks one on top of another, trying to line them up the best you can. The goal is to stack the tower as high as possible. But, your game will end if you drop a brick and it doesn’t land precisely on the prior one.

Even though this game is so simple, I got more enjoyment out of it than I anticipated. The more I failed at stacking the bricks, the more I wanted to beat my score. This game is easy to play, but hard to be great at, making it a perfect way to pass the time while you don’t have Wi-Fi.

3. Hey Poly

Hey Poly is a unique puzzle game with short levels that can actually be pretty tricky. Each level of the game presents you with lots of polygons that form an image. In order to win a level, you have to rotate the polygons until an image forms. While this is a simple concept, the levels get tricky fast! (Not to worry, you can use hints when you get too stumped).

Hey Poly was another game that occupied me for longer than I expected. It was simple, yet so challenging! This is the kind of game that would be great to play while listening to music or a podcast you enjoy. That combo is sure to help you move time along while your Internet is spotty.

2. Good Pizza, Great Pizza

Good Pizza, Great Pizza has been a favorite game of mine for a while. It’s hard to believe it doesn’t require any Internet because there’s so much to it. In this game, you own a pizza store and compete with your “evil” competitor across the street. As the game goes on, you unlock new customers, pizza toppings, shop decorations, and even buffs to attract customers or make more tip money. There’s also plenty of achievements and quests to keep you occupied for hours (literally, I spent two hours on this game the first time I played).

This game has a cute, homey feel with the warm color palette and array of quirky characters. It’s also great to play if you’re bored of playing repetitive mobile games. Whether you want to customize your pizzeria with a remodel, upgrade your skills, or to simply serve some pizza, Good Pizza, Great Pizza is a good option, great option to fill your Internet-less hours.

1. Poor Bunny!

Out of all the no-Internet mobile games I tested, Poor Bunny! was by far my favorite! This game is simple but has enough to it to easily play for a long time. The game has three modes: Single Player, Two Player, and Versus. In Single Player, you control a bunny trying to collect carrots by jumping across platforms while dodging arrows. While this is fun on its own, the other two game modes offer even more excitement.

In Two Player mode, two people can compete on one phone to see who can last the longest dodging arrows and collecting carrots. Your carrots both get tallied into the total, so it’s a team effort to collect as many as you can!

The Versus game mode is the opposite of Two Player. You and another person both try to collect as many carrots as possible while surviving attacking arrows, however this time the amount of carrots collected determines who wins the game.

Poor Bunny! Has great theming, as well. The game is whimsical, playing cute yet slightly frantic music as you dodge arrows in a lush green forest. Overall, Poor Bunny! has everything a good mobile game needs: variety, engaging gameplay, and a great theme.

The next time you’re stuck with no Wi-Fi, don’t panic; you now have an arsenal of fun games that will make time fly by. Just make sure to download them before you lose Internet!
