Former First Round Pick Trey Lance traded to the Dallas Cowboys after losing QB2 Battle

On August 23, 2023, the winner for the battle of QB2 was announced for the San Francisco 49ers. Sam Darnold was officially announced the backup for starting quarterback Brock Purdy which leaves the question for Trey Lance. Both quarterbacks have been going at it during training to get the backup spot. As the veteran Sam Darnold waits for his chance to shine, what will happen to the former first round pick who was supposed to be the future of the San Francisco 49ers?

This past weekend, the 49ers won the second preseason game with a 21-20 score against the Denver Broncos. Both Lance and Darnold did play this game with Darnold playing the half of the first and playing all the second quarter. While Lance played the third and fourth quarter, he did lead the game winning drive for the 49ers to kick a field goal to win. Darnold finished the game throwing for 109 yards with a TD pass and an interception. Lance also finished the game with a TD pass and an interception, but threw for 173 yards. This leaves the question: why isn’t Trey Lance the backup quarterback for Brock Purdy?

On August 26, 2023, the San Francisco 49ers traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2024 fourth round pick. After losing the QB2 battle, it was destined for Trey Lance to be traded away because he is still young and just doesn’t fit in the 49ers scheme. The 49ers didn’t really give Lance a shot even though he started only four games. Even though Brock Purdy took over, the 49ers gave up a lot of first round picks just to get him and now he is traded away to a rival team. The 49ers trading up for Trey Lance may have one of the worst trade ups because the 49ers gave away 2021, 2022, and 2023 first round picks including a third rounder to a quarterback the Niners didn’t fully develop.
