Come Visit Beautiful Maui: They Want You to Come!

By Alana Gonsalves

The island of Maui recently had some unpleasant incidents, including wildfires on the west side that destroyed almost 2,500 acres. Lahaina, the historic town, Maui’s biggest tourist destination, recently burned down, forcing locals to lose their homes, jobs, loved ones, and a lot of money.

You may have heard from the news media that you should not go to Maui, but this is not the case. Maui wants you to come, but not around the fire on the west side. There is still a lot to do like drive through the Road To Hana, visit their beautiful beaches all around the island, Lavender farm, and many more!

The majority of Hawaii’s economy is based on tourism, and without it, the state does not have much money. Lack of funds will result in an economic downturn, making it harder for Maui to return to its former beautiful self. You are not “taking up space,” since many unoccupied hotels are straining to make a profit.

Many local workers and small businesses are struggling to stay open right now due to lack of tourism. Many diners, shops, cafes, and other touristy shops are having a tough time with money right now. “The fire was devastating. But if the economy doesn’t come back, then that means everybody who’s there and everyone around them is going to suffer as well,” said James Kunane Tokioka, a local director of Hawaii’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

The airlines that fly to Maui are also attempting to assist. Hawaiian and Southwest are increasing flights and offering lower tickets in an effort to attract more visitors to Maui. Some are being sold for as little as $80 one trip and $160 for two ways total. They are doing this in the hopes of attracting tourists to Maui.

If you had to cancel your trip to Maui due to these unfortunate events, please come and support all of the local businesses! Even if you had no trip planned, please come; Maui needs you!
