What’s going on? and How did this happen?

The floods in Greece devastated the people, animals, and landscape. This is caused by the rainstorms hitting their neighbors, Bulgaria and Turkey. “The Greek region of Thessaly, the country’s agricultural hub, has been hit hardest by what government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis called ‘the biggest flood phenomenon that our country has ever experienced,’ The Red Cross is helping as much as they can; they are making camps in all of the villages that are being affected. “The Greek region of Thessaly, the country’s agricultural hub, has been hit hardest by what government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis called “the biggest flood phenomenon that our country has ever experienced.” According to CNN,

The rescued and the Casualties

So far, there have been more than 800 people rescued and 16 dead, six from Greece and the others from Bulgaria and Turkey. So the rain is not just coming from Greece; it’s coming from the other parts surrounding it. There are around 5,000 calls for assistance that have been received by fire and rescue alone and also by the Greek Army. They are getting calls from all around because around five flags near Kardusa have been cut off entirely by the flooring, and at least six people are missing. ”The downpour has lasted days but is expected to weaken from Thursday afternoon, according to Greece’s meteorological service. Rescue operations are now underway to try to reach those left stranded by the floodwaters, which have exceeded two meters (6.5 feet) in some parts of the country.” Sited from CNN

Why is this happening ?

Greece has had a lot of massive wildfires in the region of Athens, leaving Greece in shambles even before the floods started. “The rainstorms that started on Tuesday turned streams into raging torrents that burst dams, washed away roads and bridges, and hurled cars into the sea. Mudflows have reached the rooftops of the houses in several villages. ” According to CNN  Going from massive wildfires to extreme flooding had them making very inadequate preparations for the floods.

Greece’s resilience in the awakening of its disastrous floods was a test of its people’s untouchable spirit. The fire and rescue services as well as the military are trying their best to help these people, and the locals are helping to reconstruct what they had before it was destroyed. Greece is looking into a more secure future with catastrophes like what has happened.
