Distratuorious floods in Libya devastate the surrounding land and its people. The coastal city of Derna is where all of the massive floods have happened. “following a massive flood fed by the breaching of two dams in heavy rains, the Libyan Red Crescent said Thursday.” According to PBS. Two dams built outside of Derna were built in the 1970s; the dams have not been maintained which is part of the reason why there was massive flooding.

It not like thee the Government forgot or didn’t have any knowledge on this happening they did know and they did nothing to fix the dam this cause the immense amounts of damage “While the Tobruk-based government of eastern Libya is leading relief efforts, the Tripoli-based western government allocated the equivalent of $412 million for reconstruction in Derna and other eastern towns, and an armed group in Tripoli sent a convoy with humanitarian aid.” According to PBS.

How many people have died/Caused damage

Approximately 11,300 people have been killed, and a further 10,100 have been reported missing. The floods have forced around 30,000 people in Derna to leave their homes. The floods have damaged many acres of land ”The floods damaged or destroyed many access roads to Derna, hampering the arrival of international rescue teams and humanitarian assistance. Local authorities were able to clear some routes, and humanitarian convoys have been able to enter the city over the past couple of days.” The number of people affected by the floods numbered around 884,000 people.” According to  PBS. The floods have caused large amounts of debris and caused damage to bridges and roadways, Knocking down power lines, telephone poles, and even making their water contaminated.

Search teams are trying their best to find the people that went missing and the deceased. The floods and devastated cities make it hard for the rescuers to do their job. “Bodies are everywhere, inside houses, in the streets, at sea. Wherever you go, you find dead men, women, and children,” Emad al-Falah, an aid worker Interview from Le Monde, really tells us how absolutely horrid this situation really is.
