Nasa OSIRIS-REx Returned

By Staff

September 24th marks the beginning of a new journey in expanding our knowledge about the solar system and its creation. Early last week Nasa’s OSIRIS-REx mission returned from its 7 year expedition collecting asteroid samples.

Landing in Utah the OSIRIS-REx has returned from its trip to the Bennu asteroid where it was sent to help map the surface of the asteroid as well as provide samples from the asteroid. With these new samples scientists hope to be able to uncover more about how our solar system came to be along with how the origins of water and other organisms contributed to life on earth.

The Bennu asteroid has been in the earth’s solar system for around 10 million years, and  therefore has been here since the earth’s creation with little alteration to its construction. With samples from this asteroid scientist will be able to see what minerals and components played a key role in the solar system’s creation.

OSIRIS-REx is soon to be heading out of this world again. With a trip to asteroid Apophis planned OSIRIS-REx’s time in the spotlight is not over. Once returned in 2029 OSIRIS-REx will have contributed to countless new discoveries about our galaxy and the reaction of our world.
