COVID 19 Cases Increasing in Florida

By Wesley Heberling

Recent data, from the Florida Department of Health reveals a rise in reported COVID 19 cases in weeks. Although this increase may be concerning it is crucial to compare the situation with the volatile phases of the pandemic.

Present Situation in Florida

Over the past couple of weeks there has been an upturn in reported COVID 19 cases across Florida. According to the department’s report the state recorded 18,518 cases during the week starting August 11th. A similar number of 18,556 cases in the preceding week. These figures represent the totals observed over the ten weeks.

However it’s important to note that these numbers are significantly lower than the spikes witnessed earlier during the pandemic. Health experts now consider COVID 19 to be in its phase. This means that while the virus continues to exist within our population its spread is more predictable with surges.

Mortality Rate Unfortunately

Florida’s death toll due to COVID 19 is approaching 90,000 fatalities. As per the update there have been 89,905 deaths related to this virus in our state—a rise, from 89,565 reported at the beginning of August.

It’s worth noting that a large majority of these deaths, 85.2%, have occurred among individuals aged 60 and above with those who’re 65 or older accounting for about 77.6% of the fatalities. The exact timeline of these deaths remains uncertain due to delays in reporting

There could be reasons contributing to the surge. Scientists suggest that wanting immunity in the population combined with an increase in gatherings and family get-togethers during the summer might be playing a role. Additionally the intense Florida heat, which leads people to spend more time indoors could be facilitating the spread of the virus.

Furthermore there has been a decline in the number of COVID 19 vaccine doses being administered recently as reported by the department. This decrease may leave individuals to infection underscoring the importance of continuous vaccination efforts.

In conclusion

The recent rise in COVID 19 cases in Florida serves as a reminder that although we have made progress in handling the pandemic the virus still poses threats. It is crucial for everyone to continue following recommended safety measures and take advantage of vaccination opportunities.
