Recently, news has spread across the web following a rumor that popular rainbow candy skittles will be banned in the state of California. Skittles is the number one non chocolate candy among buyers across all retail stores.
Last week, the governor of California, Gavin Newsom signed a bill called the California Food Safety Act. This bill will ban the sale of four food additives that are found in thousands of candies. These additives are known to reportedly cause cancer and other health defects. Originally in June of 2023 it was possible that Skittles would be removed entirely from the shelves, but as of now they will remain with a little change. The infamous and controversial “Red Dye 3” is among the upcoming banned additives. Red dye 3 is found in Nerds, Skittles, Trolli’s, Pop-Tarts, and Peeps. Titanium Dioxide, one of the ingredients in Skittles, is included in the four banned chemicals. It is a white food coloring used to give specific foods smooth textures. This shouldn’t cause a change to the infamous taste of Skittles. It is not yet known what effect the banning of Titanium Dioxide will have on Skittles.
The news of a reported Skittles ban went crazy online. Millions of people shared their rage and disappointment across the internet. As of now you can rest easy knowing that skittles will still be available for purchase, and not banned as rumored. The FDA has signed off for these additives to be removed from all products by the year 2027. This gives Skittles and Companies alike some time to make changes to their products. Even with the ban of these additives Skittles should have no notable difference in taste.
