On the seventh of October Hamas, a Palestinian military group, launched an attack on Israel. The attack was launched from the Gaza Strip, a territory controlled under Israel with mostly Palestinians residing there. This attack follows years of tension between Israel and Palestine. Over the years thousands of civilians and soldiers have been killed by attacks on both sides. Palestine has suffered a lot more than Israel, with tens of thousands of civilian deaths caused by the Israeli military and rocket attacks.
Since Israel declared war on Hamas following a Palestinian offensive, hundreds have died and billions of damage has been caused. Israel has claimed that at least 900 Israelis have been killed so far, mostly civilians. A reported almost 600 people have been killed in Gaza as retaliation from Israeli airstrikes.
The country of Israel and the territory of Palestine are home to many sacred religious artifacts and pieces of history. These include churches, temples, and sanctuaries of the Christian religion as well as the Jewish and Muslim. Seeing as this war so far has been mostly missile attacks and airstrikes it is safe to assume that precious artifacts and timepieces from history will be lost in the destruction of this war. Just two days into the war the third oldest church in the world was reportedly destroyed.
Many people are also being held hostage by Hamas. Biden has confirmed that Americans are among the hostages taken by Hamas. Hamas has threatened Israel with death to these hostages of which include about 150 people. 14 Americans have been killed in the attacks so far. Biden has called this war an act of terrorism and has denounced the actions of Hamas and Gaza. He has called these attacks, “pure unadulterated evil.” The defense minister of Israel has ordered a full on siege of Gaza. The way the War is going leads me to believe that it will be a brutal but short war. With all of Israel’s weapons, alliances, and resources it is likely it will end in their liking, but there is no true way of knowing how this will end up.
