Russia has taken the first step to revoke the “Comprehensive Nuclear Ban Treaty.” Russia’s top lawmakers have since warned the United States that Moscow could eventually void the pact completely. Russia has since decided to get rid of the pact because it wants to restore parity with the United States, it has been signed, but it never ratified the 1996 treaty. Certain arms control experts are exceedingly concerned that this could lead to a test that could end up causing a new era of nuclear warheads.
Russia has never carried out a nuclear test since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Could this mean that since they are ratifying this treaty, they will start producing and testing nuclear warheads? Senior researcher Audrey Bakiltskey said that Putin stated in February that Russia must “make everything ready.” This could mean that Russia is ready to start a test. A document noted that if Putin were to use nukes, he would only use them in the sense that Russia was being severely attacked. Another particular reason might be that if a country is using these conventional weapons, they might choose to interfere.
