“Generation Z”, also known as “the last generation” is trying everything to stop climate change. But, “are the methods they use really useful?”
The protesters of the “last generation” are currently the ones in Germany who are particularly drawing attention to what they believe to be a failed climate policy. They call themselves the “Last Generation”, because they believe that they are in fact the last to prevent a climate collapse. After them, it would have been too late, and the planet would be rushing towards global warming with catastrophic consequences. In order to stop development, they are calling for decarbonization.
The activists have glued themselves on the streets since early 2022 to protest against climate change. Yes, you heard right. Thousands of teenagers and other members of the “Last Generation” are literally sticking themselves on the streets with superglue that can just be removed by acid or cooking oil. Their goal is to reduce the number of people using cars and encourage them to use public transportation.
The group specifically wants to put an end to state financing of infrastructure for fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, the rapid advancement of renewable energies, and a turnaround in mobility. Including the Nine-Euro Ticket, the Nine-Euro Ticket is a pass which allows you to use public transport throughout Germany for 9 euros a month and Tempo 100 on motorways. It also calls for a shift towards more sustainable agriculture and more measures to insulate buildings.
But, the activists probably didn’t expect an extreme reaction from the drivers.
The first reactions were quite normal. The inhabitants were upset about the people and called the police. The police usually remove the people from the road with cooking oil and a spatula.
But, it did not stop there. Multiple Drivers got out of their cars and tried to pull the climate activists off the road. Police officers even became violent and used force, dislocating the jaw of one activist. Some people might ask, “Why is everyone so upset? They just want to protest for the climate!” But, what the activists did not think about is that by blocking the roads, motorists are disturbed, while also having other consequences.
The consequences are: Ambulances were held up, causing many people to die or have their state worsen, causing them to almost die. . Many people did not get to their jobs on time and were even fired. Police officers did not get to their duty stations, etc. And of course, what this also entails is the hatred that the people felt for the activists after a short time. This actually caused reactions against them, which had a negative impact on the climate. This is the exact opposite of what the activists wanted to achieve.
Now they are sticking themselves on highway exits, in front of car dealerships, other streets and even on the taxiway of the airport BER (Berlin – Brandenburg).
A few weeks ago, they pelted the “Brandenburgertor” (Berlin’s monument) with paint. In this photo, you can see that the climate activists do not really act for the climate, but only try to cause commotion with ignorant intentions. The “Brandenburgertor” is made of sandstone, which is a very porous material. The paint has caused a layer of the monument to dissolve, and the restoration work costs the state 35,000 Euros.
