On October 23, a deadly tragedy took place when a 168 car pile-up occurred on Louisiana Interstate 55 due to super fog. This crash resulted in 8 dead and at least 63 injured according to state police.
This crash was initially caused due to heavy smoke produced by marsh fires in the area combined with dense fog making for very low visibility. These extremely dangerous driving conditions caused the pile-up and soon after the initial accident caught fire, worsening the visibility while creating more danger for people on the road.
The super fog that caused the crash is a weather occurrence that takes place when condensed water vapor mixes with smoke and moisture from damp heated organic materials. This caused visibility to be as less than ten feet forward. The dangerous condition has been ongoing in the area in the following days and is continuing to contribute to dangerous driving conditions.
The crash has caused large road closures due to the immense clean up needed. The 24 mile stretch of interstate 55, as well as interstates 10 and 310 were all closed in regards to cleaning up the wreck and making way for emergency and police vehicles. The I-55 bridge that the wreck took place on is scheduled to soon be checked for its structural security following the crash, once checked, the bridge will be reopened.
