Kevin McCarthy Makes History as the First House Representative to be Fired During Term

By Staff

On October 3rd, the House of Representatives made history when they voted out the Californian Republican Speaker of the house, Kevin McCarthy, for the first time in the House of Representatives’ 234 year history. Although McCarthy is not the first Speaker of the House to leave mid term, he is the first Speaker to be voted out and forced to resign. This leaves the House in a state of uncertainty, wondering what is next for the country with many major issues coming to a head.

With a vote of 216 – 210, democrats voted unanimously with the support of 8 republicans to dispel McCarthy from the House. There are a few reasons that McCarthy was voted out, but the two main contributors are the lack of unity between Republican representatives and  the Democrats’ dislike for McCarthy in general.

The deciding factor to McCarthys dismissal from the House was the 8 republican members who voted against him. This was mainly done out of spite, wanting to punish McCarthy for working with Democrats on previous projects. Many House Republicans claim they were unable to trust their speaker who instilled nothing but chaos in the House.

With the unanimous Democrat vote it is clear that there was an overall dislike for the previous speaker. Mainly due to a bill he needed support for in the previous week, where he gave Democrats very little time to consider, that was followed by his false accusation against the democrat members wanting a government shutdown. While McCarthy has given Democrats plenty of reasons to dislike him, voting him out may not have been the smartest thing for the  future of the house. Although he has made a number of questionable decisions, McCarthy has also been able to make considerable compromises between the Republicans and Democrats that may be unachievable for future House Speakers.

Overall the vote to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy could lead to drastic changes for our country as we are uncertain who will take McCarthy’s place, and what this historical event will bring for the future of the House and the country.
