Origins Of Halloween

By Staff

Halloween is celebrated annually at the end of October. Some popular Halloween traditions are Trick-or-Treat, dressing up in costumes, candy, making a Jack-o’-lantern, and bobbing for apples. Halloween comes from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. According to The Westport of Library, Samhain is celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome harvest and usher. Ancient Celts believed spirits would go into the world and interact with them during this time. They would wear different kinds of costumes to scare off the ghosts. Then, Pope Gregory made November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Halloween traditions develop over time and are enjoyed by many.

For example, Trick-or-Treating is one of the most famous traditions. Many people around the world dress up and go trick-or-treating door to door. The origin is unknown, many people believe it came from Scotland, and the UK, but many people also believe it originated from Samhain like Halloween. We say the phrase “Trick-or-Treat!” for people to give us treats like candy; in return, we don’t trick them like TP their houses and prank them. Another example is making Jack-o’ lanterns. Jack-o’ lanterns are pumpkins that are carved to make faces and lighted with a candle inside them. According to “Why Do We Carve Pumpkins at Halloween?” from Britannica, the origin of Jack-o’ lanterns comes from an Irish myth. A demon named Stingy Jack roams around the earth, in order to scare him away they carved scary faces out of turnips, then the turnips turn into pumpkins. Today, these traditions became very popular and enjoyed by all. It celebrates Halloween and embraces excitement.
