At least seven people were killed as a result of the dense “super fog,” which caused a deadly pileup of 158 cars. In addition, 25 people were injured during this horrific incident on I-55 in New Orleans. The crash was so horrible that police expect the death toll will rise.
Louisiana has been battling recent wildfires, heat waves, and terrible droughts. This is a major contributor to the causation of the superfog, along with multiple marsh fires occurring around the area. Marsh fires are usually caused by lightning strikes or people. These fires are usually in remote areas, which makes it very difficult to fight them. When the crash happened, a vehicle caught fire, which then spread to other damaged vehicles. This caused a trail of burned cars, adding smoke to the fog.
Focusing on the stories of people involved: On I-55, there was a truck carrying a hazardous liquid. The truck was found to be off-loaded because at any time it could blow. Sources don’t know how the truck was off-loaded, though.
Clarence Patterson Reed, a 46-year-old who had been driving to Hammond, told a news reporter how she was able to avoid a car in front of her, but the vehicles behind her slammed into her. Still, she was able to get out of her car, bringing herself to safety.
There are many vehicles that have been incinerated by the flames, many people have been injured, and concerns over our planet have been brought to people’s attention. As the death toll may still rise and people go through the trauma of loss, let’s keep all who were involved in our thoughts and prayers.
