Woolly Mammoths are Coming Back

By Staff

Woolly Mammoths once roamed the Northern hemisphere of the Earth around 20,000 years ago. Around 10,000 years ago their populations began to dwindle due to melting ice and lack of food. Nearly 4,000 years ago the Mammoths became completely extinct. The Woolly Mammoths once coexisted with humans thousands of years ago. Early forms of art were actually created with Mammoth tusks. With recent developments it seems that humans may coexist with these beast sooner rather than later. In the state of North Dakota, scientists from the research group; “Colossal Biosciences”  are working to bring back the Wooly Mammoths through DNA manipulation. The state of North Dakota has been chosen as the hub for this reintroduction of Mammoths because of its location and climate. The state’s Northern latitude and cold climate could be the perfect location for these new age Mammoths. Colossal Sciences is also planning to reintroduce other long extinct animals including the famous Tasmanian Tiger and Dodo Bird.

The Woolly Mammoths share a high percentage of DNA with the African Elephant. Through DNA manipulation from found fossils of Mammoth bones and tissue, these scientists plan to eventually place a new Mammoth embryo inside of an African Elephant. After more and more Mammoths are born, the end goal for these scientists will be to repopulate parts of the arctic with these new Woolly Mammoths. This could prove to be beneficial for the ecosystem and plant life in the arctic to have these beasts around once again. It is said that with Woolly Mammoths returning to Tundras soil could be prevented from melting and eroding.

The Mammoth gene editing work began in 2021 and after over $60 million in funding they are expected to return to reservations in the year 2027.
