Song Of The Month: Lovesick Girls by BLACKPINK

By Kai McMillian

“Lovesick Girls”, which is the fifth song on their album “The Album”, was released on October 2nd, 2020, and it tells the story of a girl who has been heartbroken so many times; but even though she has been betrayed and hurt so much, she’s so addicted to that feeling of love that she is willing to get back with the same person after breaking up many times just to feel love, knowing well enough that it will just end up in heartbreak again. She’s so “lovesick” that she will do anything for that feeling of love and that she feels nothing without it.

Some lyrics include “Get hurt and break down; I don’t know what’s making me hold on”, “I’m nothing without this pain”, and “Can’t hear what you say, I’m happy with this pain”. These lyrics show that the love they feel for their partner is obviously bad, and they know that, but they still want to hold on even after knowing what the outcome is.

This song uses a mix of acoustic guitars with synth pop elements that give the instrumental a very happy, freeing, and nostalgic sound, with lyrics that oppose the meaning of the lyrics. The guitar parts of this song heavily remind me of the guitar sounds in the song “Wake Me Up” by Avicii so it intensifies the feelings of nostalgia this song gives me. Overall, I would say this song is one of the best songs in Blackpink’s discography. The vocals, melody of the lyrics and the beat, the instrumental, all combine so beautifully that it makes this song even more meaningful. Definitely a 10/10 Blackpink song but let’s be real, what Blackpink song isn’t a 10/10? Jokes aside, this song is definitely worth listening to once, twice, or a hundred times.

Just for some background on the group, Blackpink is a South Korean K-Pop girl group formed by the entertainment company “YG Entertainment” that debuted on August 8th, 2016. This group consists of four members: Jisoo (lead vocalist, visual), Jennie (lead rapper and vocalist), Rosé (main vocalist, lead dancer) and Lisa (main dancer, lead rapper, sub-vocalist). The group debuted with their single album, Square Up, featuring the songs Whistle and Boombayah. Ever since their debut, the group has gained a massive amount of success in a short amount of time, with their first performance at Coachella in 2019 on the Sahara Stage, only 2 years after their debut. Then again in 2023, on the larger Main Stage, with a whopping 125,000 people in the audience. Since their debut, they have embarked on two world tours, the 2018-2019 In Your Area tour and their 2022-2023 Born Pink tour, and has gained the title as the “Best and Biggest K-Pop girl group”.
