This past week Prime Minister of The UK Rishi Sunak held a conference to address risks brought on by growing technological advances in artificial intelligence. At this summit many leaders in tech and politicians across the world were convened together to discuss problems brought on by AI. Attendees included Elon Musk, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, and Emanuel Macron.
This week following the Summit, the White House set a clear precedent in AI moderation by requiring major tech companies to publish test results on their powerful AI systems. Many major companies making initiatives to advance AI are based in the United States. These include ChatGPT and OpenAI. The UK tech secretary stated that she was “unfazed” or unimpressed by the recent initiatives taken by the U.S government.
Elon Musk who was in attendance at the conference stated that AI is, “one of the biggest threats to humanity.” The idea that AI poses a severe threat to humanity is held by many tech figures and many people in attendance at this summit. Although the UK is moving to moderate AI more in the future, some officials have stated that at this point the advancement of AI may be inevitable. King Charles of Britain who was also present at this conference claimed that the advances in AI are, “no less important than the discovery of electricity.” King Charles compared the dangers of AI to those of climate change.
The next international summit to discuss the risks of artificial intelligence will be held in 2024. More countries will be pushing to limit and moderate new advances for AI in the near future. The struggle to control AI was summed up by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, he stated, “How can we write laws that make sense for something we don’t yet fully understand.”
