Police Shooting in Berkeley

By Sevanah Sandoval

On Monday, November 6th at 5:26 a.m., a police shooting near 7th street and Grayson street in Berkeley resulted in one person dying. When police showed up to the call for an ongoing auto burglary, they saw multiple suspects. One suspect was detained by police, and two others were seen trying to drive away from the crime scene. However, the driver crashed into a police car. When an officer saw the car heading towards the officer and the detained suspect, police shot at the vehicle, striking the driver that would later be transferred to Highland Hospital and succumb to their injuries.

According to Berkeley police spokesperson Officer Jessica Perry, this event is currently being investigated by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and Coroner’s office, along with police. Officer Perry also disclosed that it is currently unknown how many officers fired their guns, and that no police officers were injured in the shooting. Though details on the story are still being released, it is known that a 37-year-old man from Novato and a 30-year-old woman from Oakland were arrested as suspects of robbery, along with a woman suspected of being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

People are also being asked to avoid the area where the event took place. According to a Berkeley resident interviewed by ABC 7 News, the large area closed off marks a “big operation,” and they have “never seen anything quite this big in Berkeley.”

This is the Berkeley Police Department’s second deadly shooting involving an officer this year since September, with the first taking place at the Berkeley Toyota service center in Albany.

Further information about the officers involved and the suspects has yet to be released as of Wednesday, November 8th.
