Many countries are currently debating whether TikTok should be banned or not.
But what is it all about?
In general, it is all about security measures. The app “TikTok” is a short video app owned by China. China is accused by all sides of failing to comply with security regulations and, in particular, of using location data to pass it onto the Secret Service.
Lawmakers also fear China could use TikTok’s content recommendations for misinformation.
Since November 2022 , more than two dozen states have banned TikTok on government-issued devices, and many colleges – such as the University of Texas at Austin, Auburn University, and Boise State University – have blocked it from on-campus Wi-Fi networks. But often, students simply switch to mobile data to use the app.
In May, Governor Greg Gianforte of Montana signed a bill banning TikTok from operating within the state, the first such ban in the country. Days later, TikTok filed a lawsuit, claiming that the legislation violated the First Amendment. The ban is due to enter into force on January 1.
In August, the city of New York banned TikTok from city devices after the city’s Cyber Command determined that the app “presents a security threat to the city’s technical networks.
TikTok has long rejected such accusations and tried to distance itself from ByteDance (a global incubator of platforms at the cutting edge of commerce, content, entertainment and enterprise services)
India already banned it in 2020 for all citizens in the country. They also sued and accused TikTok of violating state consumer protection laws and exposing children to juvenile-free content.
Utah did a similar thing, but they accused the app of being a child-friendly product and causing harm.
But how is it in America? Some members of the government would like to ban it and have already done so with military employees or other people in relation to the government.
However, this is still open for debate. Nobody can say if it will be banned, but we will learn more in the future.
