George Santos is a US representative for the 3rd congressional district of New York, who has faced many controversies in the past. Santos is now facing expulsion from Congress for spending his campaign money on botox, vacations, adult websites, and gambling. He’s facing 23 federal charges including wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States.
In the past, Santos has faced multiple controversies regarding the lies he has told the media about his life and himself. On a conservative podcast, Santos claimed that his “grandparents survived the holocaust.” Santos said he was “Jew-ish” because of an alleged Jewish background on his mother’s side. Santos then told Fox News, “For a lot of people who are descendants of World War II refugees or survivors of the Holocaust, a lot of names and paperwork were changed in name of survival.” He also claimed that he had Ukrainian ties on his mother’s side. However, according to genealogy reports reviewed by CNN, Santos was neither of these ethnicities he claimed to be. Genealogist Megan Smolenyak told CNN,“There’s no sign of Jewish and/or Ukrainian heritage and no indication of name changes along the way”. Multiple family records show that Santos’ maternal grandparents were born in Brazil.
The most recent “Santos Scandal” is how Santos has been spending campaign money, lying to the donors about where the money has gone. During his campaign back in 2020, Santos used the campaign debit card to make a $1,500 purchase at Mirza Aesthetics and a $1,400 purchase at Virtual Skin Spa. The two purchases were noted as “Botox” in Santos’ expense spreadsheets produced to ISC. Two people donated $25,000 to Redstone Strategies, Santos’s LLC. Santos transferred these donations to his personal bank account and laundered them. The House Ethics Committee released an official report of what Santos spent the money on.
“After the $50,000 from RedStone was deposited into Representative Santos’ personal accounts, the funds were used to, among other things: pay down personal credit card bills and other debt; make a $4,127.80 purchase at Hermes; and for smaller purchases at Only Fans; Sephora; and for meals and for parking.”
The House Ethic Committee’s report was the substantial proof needed to possibly expel Santos. If expelled from Congress, Santos would only be the sixth person to ever be expelled from Congress. Only five people have ever been expelled from Congress, the majority of them being during the Civil War. Regarding the possible expulsion, Santos says, “If the House wants to start different precedent and expel me, that is going to be the undoing of a lot of members of this body. Because this will haunt them in the future where mere allegations are sufficient to have members removed from office when duly elected by their people in their respective states and districts.” The verdict of his expulsion is expected to be revealed by Congress on December 1st, 2023.
