On November 11, 2023, former Raiders cornerback D.J. Hayden was among six people killed in a car crash in Houston, Texas.
Others killed in the crash were two other former Houston Cougars Zach McMillian and Ralph Oragwu. There were also three other victims whose names were not released to the public as of yet although authorities said one appeared to be homeless. Four of the victims died at the scene and two were transported to the hospital but unfortunately died due to their injuries.
Derek Sherrard (D.J.) Hayden Jr who was only 33 at the time of his death, was born in Houston and was a part of the University of Houston football team. During this time he endured a near death heart injury during a practice.
D.J. played for four NFL teams: the Oakland Raiders, the Detroit Lions, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Washington Commanders.
This death has hit hard to many Raiders fans across the nation. The Raiders ultimately made a statement on twitter saying “ The prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with D.J.’s loved ones at this time.”
The Investigation surrounding the crash is still ongoing.
This accident is a reminder of how dangerous driving could be. People need to be careful when driving to keep the people around them and even themselves safe.
