The annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in Benicia is fast approaching. Every year at the beginning of December, families and friends gather in their festive gear to stroll down First Street, eager to usher in the holiday season. The atmosphere is cheery and full of excitement, especially for the little ones who ardently await the appearance of a myriad of colorful lights. Carolers can be heard singing holiday songs as visitors walk towards the tree.
Many can be seen with cups of hot chocolate warming their hands, wandering in and out of the First Street shops. At the same time as the Tree Lighting is the Holiday Open House. Many of the businesses along the street open their doors and give out hot drinks and cookies to visitors. I would recommend taking the opportunity to have a meal at one of the restaurants on First Street either before or after the ceremony.
At the end of First Street, the crowd gathers around the tree. While they wait, they enjoy live music. They are also joined by Santa and some of his elves, who make sure that their guests are having a jolly time. The mayor, other Benicia city officials, and the Benicia High School band participate in the ceremony, leading the countdown to the turning on of the lights. After all the anticipation and the countdown, the tree comes to life with beautiful lights.
All this will happen once again on First Street on December 1, 2023, this Friday, from 6 to 9 pm. The Tree Lighting is a wonderful event to bring together the Benicia community. Be sure to take this opportunity to enjoy the charm of a most wonderful little town at the start of the most wonderful time of the year.
