Over the past few weeks, a mysterious canine illness has been spreading rapidly through the United States. With the illness leaving owners concerned, veterinarians confused, and dogs sick, people around the country are looking for answers.
The respiratory illness begins with a cough followed by runny eyes and sneezing mimicking a common kennel cough, with one important difference; it seems to be resistant to medication. Though the treatment for this illness is still in the works, the American Veterinary Medical Association has concluded that the infection is aerosolized and spread through close contact with another infected dog.
While more and more dogs are being struck with his mysterious illness, veterinarians and scientists are racing to find answers. One thing professionals are still unsure of is whether this illness is bacterial or viral and whether or not it is related to the very common kennel cough. The lack of knowledge surrounding this illness is especially concerning, considering that veterinarians have warned that if the illness goes untreated for too long it can develop into acute bronchitis or pneumonia.
Considering that the illness can be easily transmitted easily, along with its inability to be treated, professionals are advising pet owners to be extra careful while traveling this holiday season. Many are concerned with boarding dogs during this holiday season due to the high risk that is presented when a large number of dogs are in a small area. Director of virtual medicine at Bond Vet Dr. Lisa Lippman advises pet owners to find a trusted friend or dog sitter who can look after your canine friends while you may be away.
While the treatment for this mysterious illness is still unknown, veterinary professionals are monitoring the spread and symptoms very carefully and working tirelessly to find answers.
