On Wednesday, December 7th, a fatal shooting took place at UNLV that involved a gunman who was a professor that had recently applied for a job at the school. Police say 3 were killed in the incident, including a fourth who was seriously injured. The scene ended in a shootout with police where the gunman was eventually killed.

Students were left terrified in crowded classrooms and dorms while the events unfolded. A law enforcement official with direct knowledge informed the press that the professor, “had unsuccessfully sought a job at the school,” and had, “previously worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina.”

The shooter opened fire at about 11:45 am Wednesday on the fourth floor of UNLV’s Lee Business School houses, before traveling to several other floors, where witnesses have reported hearing about 20 shots fired. The gunman, identified as Anthony Polito, age 67, then entered a shootout with two university police officers outside the building. The all-clear was given about 40 minutes after the report of an active shooter.

Police say that if it weren’t for their quick reaction time, the shooting could have been much more fatal since several students were gathered outside the building eating and playing games. Sheriff McMahill says, “No student should have to fear pursuing their dreams on a college campus.”
