Before this Sunday’s game, a fan tailgate group decided to noose a skeleton wearing a Seahawks jersey and it has led to investigation by the home team.
The tailgate group that did this is called group 408 Faithfuls and set up its usual event, the “Faithful Boulevard” at Levi’s Stadium. The hanging skeleton appears to be wearing No. 3, the jersey of Seahawk quarterback Russel Wilson. It was clearly seen in several videos posted on Instagram and X from a music video shoot occuring at the tailgate.
The 49ers sent a team spokesperson to release a statement, “ We condemn the use of racist imagery and anyone involved in this incident,” the statement said, “ We are continuing to investigate and remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that our community continues to be a safe and inclusive atmosphere for all fans to enjoy the sport.” .
Members of the 408 Faithfuls chose not to respond and deleted any posted videos of the skeleton. Even King, the musician performing there, deleted his video as well. The Santa Clara police department had no comment at this time as well.
Rev. Jethroe Moore, president of the San Jose-Silicon Valley NAACP Chapter says that the noose represents lynching historically of people of color, and is something he has seen before being a football fan himself. He is now calling on the 49ers to begin patrolling their parking lots so that this type of hatred won’t be tolerated. He also asks the 408 Faithful’s to apologize in order to rectify the situation.
