On Wednesday, December 6th, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinsk announced that the McDonald’s company would be opening a spin-off chain themed around space and the “beloved, extraterrestrial mascot from the ’80s and ’90s…CosMc” (NBC Today). According to Kempczinsk, the beverage-focused chain is “a small format concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s but its own unique personality.” The concept follows the idea of “what would happen if a McDonald’s character from the 1980s that was part alien, part surfer, [and] part robot” opened a restaurant” (USA Today; CBS News).
The first pilot location in the Chicago suburbs of Bolingbrook, Illinois opened as of Thursday, December 7th, and ten more test locations in Texas have openings planned throughout 2024. Kempczinsk noted, however, that potential locations in the future will be a while out because the company will be studying the response to the planned CosMc’s locations for “at least a year before determining whether to add more locations” (CBS News).
Alongside planned locations, the McDonald’s company has also released the CosMc’s menu. It can currently be accessed on the company website. As noted by USA Today, the menu has a great focus on drinks, such as lemonades, coffees, and caffeinated slushies. In addition, there is an option to add boba, flavored syrups, and energy shots to beverages. CosMc’s is also offering snacks and breakfast items, including some well-known McDonald’s menu items, such as the Egg McMuffin and hash browns. New items include the Creamy Avocado Tomatillo Sandwich and pretzel bites.
So what is CosMc’s? Right now, it seems to be similar to Starbucks by focusing on selling drinks while still offering breakfast and snack foods. USA Today further noted that many have compared the potential chain to Dutch Bros because of its “heavy emphasis on fanciful drinks.” As of right now, however, CosMc’s is an idea of the future that us California residents won’t see for at least a year.
