France’s New Prime Minister

By Staff

France has officially hired a new Prime Minister: Gabriel Attal. Attal is an ex-member of the Socialist Party, in 2016, but Attal began to be noticed by conservatives and gain their support, mostly because, as Politico says, he is a “…political chameleon with few firm stances.” He became strongly respected by the conservatives in France when one of his first acts as the Minister of Education was banning Abayas—a dress worn by Muslim women.

Attal has been under some criticism by fellow politicians because of his upbringing. He was raised in an elite family, attending only private schools for his education. One thing to mention about Attal is his age. He’s merely 34, which is quite young for a prime minister. Despite his age, he has extensive political experience, starting in 2016 when he joined the Socialist Part, to, as Politico writes, “…a 10-month stint in 2018 as spokesperson for La République En Marche…and two years as government spokesperson from 2020 to 2022.” Attal also has wide-spread support in France. In December, an IPSOS poll showed he was France’s most famous politician.

Attal is an openly gay man, and, more than that, he’s the first ever openly gay prime minister. Already, he’s making strides in his new position. Alongside President Emmanuel Macron, Attal has picked a new Cabinet in hopes of fulfilling his promise to the Middle Class of France to help them survive the rising costs of living.

Though this new Prime Minister is young and facing some controversy over his upbringing and his opinion on religious wear, the Middle Class of France seems to have placed hope in the young man to help them weather the high prices that comes with living. There is sure to be much more coming in Attal’s career, and hopefully he can succeed in fulfilling the people’s needs.
