The San Francisco Zoo is home to over 2000 endangered, rescued and exotic animals. This includes reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, and invertebrates. With its many attractions such as multi- species habitats, gardens full of native and foreign plants as well as its scenic location just feet away from the shore, the San Francisco Zoo is a great place to spend the day. It’sjust missing one thing, a Giant Panda.
For nearly 40 years the SF Zoo has been without a Giant Panda. However the hope for one has just returned, after Chinese President, Xi Jinping made a comment while in california for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation event. During which Xi said he hopes to “deepen the friendly ties” between China and the U.S. by possibly sending some Giant Pandas to California Zoo’s
While Xi did initially quote the San Diego Zoo as the soon to be home for one of these bears, San Fransico Mayor, London Breed quickly reached out to Xi asking for San Francisco to be considered for the relocation of a Giant Panda. Breed states in his letter to Xi that this action will “grow our friendship, to greatly benefit our youth, and to continue our joint efforts on panda conservation.” and this is very true!
The addition of a Giant Panda to the San Francisco Zoo will serve not only as a great educational opportunity for the youth of the area, but also allow the members of endangered species a safe and protected home. The SF Zoo is hoping to welcome this new member of the family as soon as 2025!
