Former Los Angeles Dodgers star Steve Garvey, who’s known as one of the most successful Major League Baseball players of all time, is a current republican candidate for the California senate. After releasing his campaign in October of 2023, he has been more silent than his democratic opponents. He is currently in first place for the republican candidates, behind Democratic Rep. Katie Porter and Adam Schiff.
As of now, Steve’s position remains mostly unknown to the public and his events are less publicized as many news stations have little information about his stops. As republicans have been having trouble for many years to get a seat at the senate, Steve hopes to use his celebrity status to break that streak. He claims that California needs “a fresh voice, fresh ideas” and that “We need to bring back the vibrance of California.” after seeing rampant homelessness, rising home prices, California’s declining population and an influx of robberies.
His main motivation is that “People are stressed and they’ve been looking for a voice… And I think that’s one of the reasons things are coming together, and we’re building momentum.”. As polls come to a close soon on March 5, 2024, he hopes to take the spot after Dianne Feinstein.
