The fatal experimental plane crash that took place earlier this month in Half Moon Bay is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. Many details regarding the crash and its cause are still unknown.
The Cozy Mark IV- a single engine, four seat, amateur built plane- was found to have crashed just minutes after taking off from the Half Moon Bay Airport on Sunday January 14th. Just moments after take off witness report seeing the plane flying “erratically” and then soon flying out of view.
Investigators have ruled that the four people on board, including the pilot, are presumed dead. Although only two bodies have been found and identified as 27 year old Emma Willmer- Shields and 26 year old Cassidy Petit. A third body was recently pulled from the water and identified as a passenger of the plane, their identity has been released. The search is ongoing for the remaining passenger as well as the cause of the crash, it is known that Emma Wilmer- Shields’s fiancé, Issac Zimmern was also on board at the time of the crash.
The NTSB says that aircraft maintenance, weather conditions as well as the pilot’s background will all be looked into when identifying the cause of the crash. Investigators are also looking into air traffic control communications and any surrounding surveillance captured while the plane was in the air.
Although the cause of the crash is unknown, experts believe that its construction is what led to its failure. They say the cause was most likely a power issue related to the engine.
