After the Super Bowl, many teams have been looking for staff and why not take some from the 49ers who have had a lot of success. Some coaches who came from the 49ers who are head coaches or a huge part of the staff are former Defensive Coordinator DeMeco Ryan (Head coach of the Houston Texans), former Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniels (Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins), and former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh (Head Coach of the New York Jets). With many of the 49ers staff leaving for new opportunities and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks being fired, who’s on the staff now? Who’s left the staff and who has been promoted? Who should they hire? Let me show who was left and who has become part of the 49ers staff.
People who have left or fired:
Defensive Coordinator Steve Wilks
After just a year being on the 49ers team, head coach Kyle Shannhan decided to fire him. Shannhan’s reason was, “he wasn’t the right fit”. If you did watch the 49ers this season, their defense wasn’t as strong as it was when being coached by DeMeco Ryans or Robert Saleh. Before the 49ers, Steve Wilks was a defensive back coach for the Carolina Panthers then promoted in the middle of the season to head coach and took the Panthers to a 7-10 record in 2022.
Assistant General Manager Adam Peters
Adam Peters was the assistant general manager and was the one who found Brock Purdy in the draft. He helped a lot during the draft and will now be the general manager of the Washington Commanders.
Assistant Head Coach Anthony Lynn
Anthony Lynn who was the running back coach and assistant head coach for Kyle Shannhan has been hired to be the run game coordinator for the Washington Commanders. He was the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2021 and was the head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017-2021.
Offensive passing game specialist Klint Kubiak
Klint Kubiak was in charge of the 49ers passing game this year and they did a fantastic job in the pass. He was promoted as the Offensive Coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.
Assistant Offensive Line coach James Cregg
James Cregg, who was in charge of the 49ers offensive line for the two years in San Francisco, has been promoted to offensive line coach for the Las Vegas Raiders. He will be joining the new head coach Antinio Pierce.
Assistant defensive line coach Darryl Tapp
Former defensive end and assistant coach defensive line coach has been hired to the Washington Commanders where he will be joining Anthony Lynn and Adam Peters. He will be coaching the Commanders defensive line.
Who should be the 49ers defensive coordinator?
Right now, the 49ers have been interviewing many coaches to fill in the defensive coordinator position. We have seen coaches like Brandon Stanley who was the head coach for the Los Angeles get interviewed, Dave Merrit who was the defensive back coach for the Kansas Chiefs, some people from the 49ers staff are also being interviewed for the position. Two of them are defensive back coach Daniel Bullocks and defensive passing game coordinator Nick Sorensen has also been interviewed. If I’m going to be honest, the 49ers should hire someone from the 49ers because when the 49ers had a top defense, DeMeco Ryans was the linebacker coach who was promoted to DC, they had a top defense. I do believe the 49ers are still capable of being a Super Bowl contending team again, but they do need to hire someone soon.
