Spotlight on the Benicia Golf Team

By Joseph Bugarin

After finishing 2nd in the DAL division, the Benicia golf team is now back. Alongside some familiar faces from last year, we acknowledge and welcome new members. Some notable all league team returners are Junior, Lawrence Collins  and Senior, Josh Hull.. Some new players who you should watch out for are Senior, Aaron Young who is a transfer from Berean Christian and Senior, Ethan Hoguland. The Benicia Golf Team is looking to go back to win the league again and have a chance to compete in the playoffs against other good teams.

Varsity/JV.

In golf, there are usually five to six players who get to play in matches against other schools and the players are alternated through the weeks. Recently varsity had a scrimmage against Justin Sienna highschool and played against 26 other schools in the 2024 Cowboy Wente Classic this last Wednesday. In the Justin Sienna match, Varsity lost the Scrimmage shooting 208 while Justin Sienna only shot 194 on 9 holes.. Here are some of the scores of the six people that played in the Justin Sienna match: Lawrence Collins: 40, Clay Zeilsorff: 40, Ethan Hoglund: 40, Aaron Young: 43, Josh Hull: 45, and Jacob Diehl: 50. During the Wente match, Benicia tied for 13th place scoring 395 against the 26 other schools that they competed against. The best scores were from Ethan Hoglund who scored 76 on and Lawrence Collins who scored 77 on 18 holes in the Cowboy classic. The next matches that are coming up are against Concord, Berean Christian, and Alhambra. Berean Christian is one of the teams to look out for golf, so Benicia will have to be consistent to be able to pull off the win. They will have to win many games to be able to go back to winning the league in the DAL, but will have to work very hard to be able to win.

Besides the starting six that usually play, sometimes there are matches where eight to ten people are able to play. Here are some names who could sneak into those spots, sophomore Joey Padilla, junior Sebastian Uselman, junior Jacob Bugarin, freshman Rowan Jenoyer, and senior Erik Lisenko. When matches are able to be played with at least 8-10 people, those could be the people that will be playing with the varsity squad. Usually junior varsity for golf isn’t really a thing because usually five to six players are able to play in real matches that count for the record. That still doesn’t mean anyone has a shot to capture the spots when matches can take more people. With many more matches to come, Coach Bob Hall expects this team to win the league after many teams senior players who were good have left. We hope Benicia is able to win the league after just placing second last year.  We hope the people of the Benicia High School could also support them and give the recognition.
