It’s that time of year again, Spring is right around the corner! By this point in the season we’re all tired of the cold and rainy days that follow each other back to back, day after day. Luckily as we are entering March, brighter days are within reach. Soon all the puddles will dry up, the flowers will bloom, the days will get longer and the sun will always be shining. With this wonderful shift in seasons come one task that is daunting to us all: spring cleaning.
Spring has been deemed “the time to restart,” it is all about new beginnings and fresh starts after a dingy and gloomy 3 months of cold. While cleaning is a dreaded task for most, it can be a great way to jump into a new season. Spring cleaning goes back thousands of years and in many cultures it is believed that getting rid of dust and removing clutter is a way to prevent ill fortune in the year to come. The biological explanation for spring cleaning is attributed to the excess of melatonin produced during winter, causing us to be more sleepy, decreasing as the days get longer. As the days get longer we produce less melatonin and gain more energy, urging our bodies to get moving.
Deep spring cleaning can have numerous benefits on mental health, physical health, and it is a great way to improve your environment in a healthy way. Researchers have found that spring cleaning is shown to lighten moods, relieve stress, and increase productivity. It’s a known fact that after decluttering, sweeping, and vacuuming we all feel a little better about our surroundings and even, ourselves. Cleaning the space around us gives us a sense of control regarding our environment, helping us to have a more positive attitude, which is a great way to start a season off.
Decluttering your home translates to decluttering your life. By getting rid of things you no longer need, and cleansing the space you live in, you are not only organizing your environment but also organizing your life. Spring cleaning symbolizes giving yourself a fresh start, which is what Spring is all about! Going into a new season with a fresh environment and a sense of new beginnings is the perfect way to destress and focus on the season to come, along with the opportunities that are presented as the days get warmer.
Having a clean environment keeps us grounded. No matter how chaotic or challenging the day, week, or even month has been, coming home to a tidy house brings you back down to earth and helps ease the tensions of the day. After a tough and gloomy winter season this is something many of us need. While the task of cleaning may not seem like the thing you need in order to decompress since it’s dreaded by most of us, but giving a deep clean a try while in a slump coming out of winter months is something worth trying.
