College Option Tips

by Lena Turcios

When thinking about where you want to go to college there are many factors that you need to take into consideration. These include environment, pricing, and overall your own happiness. In this article I will give my own thoughts on how to choose a college. As a High School student and an eighteen year old I am currently undergoing this decision. The process is not easy but my advice is to apply to as many schools that catch your eye. If anything, you have more options to choose from and won’t be penalized for applying to multiple colleges.

Firstly, a good factor to evaluate is the environment. Questions to consider when applying: Will this be a suitable environment for me to live in? Will I have any family living in this area? Is there any affordable housing in this area? Try to weigh the pros and the cons of all options but make sure you aren’t overthinking it too much. Keep in mind that you can always transfer to different community colleges/colleges. If you don’t feel prepared to go straight to four years then community college is always your friend. It doesn’t hurt to gain extra knowledge that will help you in your future education. The last thing you want to do is stick to a college that makes you unhappy. If you aren’t happy then something will need to change.

Secondly, considering the pricing is very important. If you don’t acknowledge this factor then it could land you in a world of financial trouble. Before you go to a four year college, etc. and end up in debt, it’s crucial to make sure you are financially stable in order to succeed. It’s very common for people to spend money on college and end up with none left. From my own current experience, working occasionally and going to school is a good route. Be prepared for the loads of stress if you choose to do this. It can be very anxiety-inducing having a work responsibility along with school, giving you little time to get ready or even relax. It’s good to take time off from working and have free time but a plan for the future is always a good thing. Nothing has to be completely planned out but if you have ideas of what you want then things will be easier. A lot of people switch colleges, major’s, etc. so don’t feel pressured to choose your forever major right away. For many people it takes years and years to decide what they want to pursue in life.

Thirdly, your happiness is most important! If you don’t think about what you want, then you will never be happy with your life. Choose a college, a town, a major, an environment that best suits you. Don’t base your decisions off of what others want. Sometimes parents can be very controlling in the career aspect of their kids’ lives, but ultimately its up to the students to decide for themselves. Personally, I think it’s a good idea to study lots of subjects in order to broaden your horizons. Take classes that might put you outside of your comfort zone. Explore in the fields of education but make sure you are also enjoying your life at the same time. Education is pointless to you if you aren’t.
