Ozempic: What is it?

By Kana McNiff

Ozempic, a drug containing semaglutide, was a drug originally created to treat people with Type 2 diabetes. It is injected once weekly and lowers blood sugar by making the pancreas produce more insulin. However, ever since it was put on the market in 2017, it’s been used as a weight loss tool for many people. Ozempic can help people lose weight by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone. This hormone sends signals to the brain, telling you that you’re full, and it also slows digestion.

According to the FDA, while Ozempic hasn’t been cleared for use as a weight loss drug, Wegovy, a similar drug containing a higher dose of semaglutide, is. However, because Wegovy was only released to the public in 2021, it is not as popular as Ozempic is. One public figure who has openly admitted to using Wegovy is Elon Musk. When asked how he achieved his “ripped” and “fit” body, he replied, “Fasting” “And Wegovy”.

Other celebrities have been accused of using Ozempic due to their dramatic weight loss transformations. One of these celebrities is Kim Kardashian, who is rumored to have used Ozempic to get into shape.

While Ozempic does not show any negative symptoms, there is not enough data to know the long term effects of it on those using it for weight loss. As of right now, it is not recommended for weight loss.
