The Ghibli Fest 2024

This year, Studio Ghibli is holding their annual fest for 2024, but this time with 14 beloved movies making it the biggest year yet. Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation founded on June 15, 1985. Studio Ghibli is known for their beautiful and classic movies that many people have watched and loved around the world. For this fest, the 14 movies that are appearing on theaters in order are Spirited Away, Nausicaä, Castle In The Sky, A Secret World of Arrietty, When Marnie Was Here, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Whisper of The Heart, The Cat Returns, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Pom Poko, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, and My Neighbor Totoro. About the movies:

  • Spirited Away – This is a story about a girl named Chihiro and her parents who stumbled upon an abandoned amusement park. When her parents ate food from there, they turned into pigs. She meets Haku and from him, it is explained that the abandoned amusement park is a resort for supernatural beings. To get out, she will have to work hard to free herself and her parents from the spiritual realm.
  • Nausicaä – Nausicaä believes in the value of life. This story takes place after an apocalyptic conflict that destroyed most of the world’s ecosystem. She could communicate with insects and with the help and guidance of Lord Yupa, she works to bring peace to the plant again.
  • Castle In The Sky – Sheeta was kidnapped by Muska to find the castle in the sky and its treasures until a group of pirates by Dola crashed into them. From there, she meets Pazu who is an orphan like her, and escapes together. Having a magic crystal, they are racing against pirates and agents to find a legendary floating castle and for the city’s myriad treasures. 
  • A Secret World of Arrietty – Arrietty is a small human. She lives with her parents and follows the rules of hiding from normal humans. But, Shō, a normal human, meets Arrietty and they create a secret friendship. They both appreciate their relationship, but it may lead them to danger. 
  • When Marnie Was Here – Anna moved to Norfolk after healing from her illness. From there, she meets Marnie overlooking the marshes and they develop a secret friendship. Throughout the movie, she discovers that Marnie isn’t who she is.  
  • Princess Mononoke – This story follows Ashitaka who got cursed by an inflected boar. He travels to seek the cure and meets Princess Mononoke. A war begins between the gods and the humans and he was caught up to the war to bring peace between both sides. 
  • Ponyo – Ponyo is a goldfish princess who fell in love with a human boy named Sosuke.
  • Whisper of The Heart – Whisper of The Heart is about a girl named Shizuku Tsukishima. She loves reading books. In the library and noticed that all the books that she loved were previously checked by Seiji Amasawa, her Prince of Books! Afterwards, she meets a boy who she finds infuriating but soon realizes that it was her Prince of Book!
  • The Cat Returns – The Cat Returns follows a highschool girl named Haru who rescues a cat. Soon, she later discovers that the cat she saved is a prince and is soon brought into the cat world where she was informed that she has to marry the prince. She meets two fellow cats and they help her escape from the cat world. 
  • Howl’s Moving Castle – The story of Howl’s Moving Castle  is about a girl named Sophie who works at a hat shop.  One day, the Witch of Waste curses her, turning her old. She meets Howl, who owns the moving castle, promises her to remove the curse upon her and moves her in the moving castle. He uses his magical powers to battle the Witch of Waste and to bring back Sophie to her true self. 
  • Kiki’s Delivery Service – Kiki is a young witch that moves to the city of Koriko with her cat Jiji to find independence. She sets a delivery service by flying on her broom. But, she loses her magic abilities because of self-doubt and learns how to get her powers back
  • Pom Poko – Pom Poko follows a group of tanukis, or shape-shifting Raccoons, to save their homes. Their forest homes are threatened by urban development and industrialization so they will use all their power to restore their homes and save it. 
  • The Tale of Princess Kaguya – The Tale of Princess Kaguya is based on a Japanese folktale named The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. This story follows a princess who is born in a Bamboo stalk. She is taken care of by two elderly couples and soon she grows very fast like a Bamboo. While growing up, many surprising gifts appear for her and her parents took it as a sign that she is a princess. 

My Neighbor Totoro – This story follows 2 sisters, Satsuke and Mei. They moved into an old house with their father. The two sisters explored their new home and befriended a playful, cuddly creator named Totoro! While waiting for their mother to get better, they both played with Totoro who made magical things and beautiful memories.
