Since February 2024, people have been discussing whether TikTok should be banned in the USA. Since then, many people have been demonstrating on the streets. Young people in particular want to protect their right to have access to this app. They make posters saying, “TikTok helped me develop my business, “I’m one of 170 Million Americans on TikTok”, “TikTok changed my life for the better,” etc. So how should the government react to these claims, and will there be a change of opinion? That is not clear yet. However, there are many arguments, as you can see, why we should NOT ban TikTok.
The main reason why security experts consider banning the app is a lack of the security aspect and the fact that the app is a national security issue. However, many experts say that banning this app will solve a very small part of the problem, as there are many other issues and there is no safe way out of the situation, and China would still not be rid of a significant amount of personal data. They describe this operation as a “security theater,” which shows that this whole process is more a “show,” so it seems as if they would want to improve the security. Their suggestion is to work on the bigger problems in order to solve them and not mess with the little ones, which causes millions of people to become upset.
These conclusions are leading to many demonstrations in which all age groups appeal for their right to TikTok. As already mentioned, they encounter many situations.
On one hand, many business owners are trying to use this app to sell their businesses and gain more popularity. Many have already succeeded in doing so. TikTok has also had a great influence on people’s creativity. Of course, the amount of time that people spend on this platform every day is demented, but it can also lead to good things.
Some also point out that those who download this app should have or could read the privacy policy so that everyone is on the network at their own risk.
In addition, TikTok helps many people express themselves and bring attention to themselves and any problems.
Because of these factors, banning TikTok should not be the first step to address security concerns. We should tackle bigger problems first. However, if, in the end, it turns out that there is no way around it, it is definitely advisable to focus on this factor again to solve possible problems.
