Chappell Roan (real name Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) is a 26 year old American singer-songwriter who rose to fame exponentially after being an opener for Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts world tour and performing at this year’s Coachella. She started her singing journey at an early age of 13 years old and even tried out for the television show “America’s Got Talent”, where unfortunately she was not accepted. She started off by uploading covers on Youtube by the age of 14, where she caught the attention of many different record labels. By the age of 17, Roan uploaded an original song on youtube titled “Die Young”. Due to this, she was signed to Atlantic Records not long after. In 2017, she released her first EP titled “School Nights”. Come 2020, Roan was dropped from Atlantic Records but soon started releasing music independently in 2022 after a brief break. When 2023 rolled around, she released her full debut album called “The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess” after she got signed to Island Records.
With Chappell Roan being a queer woman, she has expressed her experiences, and this song is one of those stories. Good Luck, Babe! Is about being in a relationship with a closeted (a term used for a queer individual who has not come out yet) girl who refuses to acknowledge their sexuality and refuses to accept the fact that she is in a relationship with a woman. Because of this, she is ironically saying “Good Luck, Babe” to her partner for denying the truth and for damaging their relationship. According to Capital FM, Chappell Roan stated that “I knew exactly what I wanted. I wrote it in three minutes. I felt so much anger. I was so upset. It all came out and I didn’t add anything when I wrote it all, done. It was a perfect storm.”, expressing the anger and frustration that came out of this “situationship”. Based on the partners actions, it caused the relationship to be toxic as Roan is putting in her all into the relationship while her partner is being negligent and insecure. Some lyrics include “It’s fine, it’s cool, You can say that we are nothing, but you know the truth”, “I don’t wanna call it off, But you don’t wanna call it love”, and “Think I’m gonna call it off, Even if you call it love”.
The song has a very upbeat, nostalgic, and freeing melody that makes you feel good, despite the true meaning of the song. The melody mixed with Chappell’s powerful, strong, smooth, and recognizable voice, this song is one to be repeated over and over and over again.not only should you listen to this song, you should definitely give her other tracks and albums a try!
