This year’s annual Met Gala took place on May 6th with tickets costing around 75,000 dollars per person and about 350,000 dollars per table. The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event that takes place at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute at which only the most elite celebrities are invited. This event falls under a new theme each year, in which celebrities are dressed by various different designers, wearing costumes worth millions of dollars. This year’s Met Gala however, has sparked controversies across the country through social media. With people calling out celebrities for neglecting their roles in society by completely ignoring the current state of the war in Gaza.
The current state of Gaza is worsening by the day with the need for more aid and more pressure for a cease fire, many people feel that celebrities are not using their positions and power correctly. With a vast majority of influencers and celebrities failing to acknowledge todays currents with a genocide taking place, people are putting more pressure on them to use their positions for good.
This year’s Met Gala took place simultaneously to the Israeli military infiltrating Rafah, a Palestinian city where over a million Palestinian people were seeking shelter and refuge. This tragedy has left countless innocent families with nowhere else to go, seeking shelter, medical help, food and basic necessities for their families survival. Meanwhile elite celebrities pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to dress up and walk down a red carpet without acknowledging the worsening situation in Gaza.
This lack of action from celebrities has led to the rising popularity of a celebrity block list. Social media users are now encouraging each other to block certain celebrities to decrease their income from ad revenue. This is being done as a form of protest hopes that it’ll raise awareness for influencers and celebrities and their followings decrease.
Being aware of events happening throughout the world is not something only “normal people” need to focus on. It is just as important for elite, high class celebrities to spread awareness regarding unjust acts. The celebrity block list has not done much yet, but it continues in hopes to pressure people with positions of power to speak up and do what is right.
