Colors vs Subjects

Many people have a strong opinion on which school subjects go with which colors. Specifically, high school students seem to have a strong opinion on this. I was wondering if different grades have different opinions on which colors are which subjects, so I asked 3 different students from each high school grade level what color they thought six different subjects were. The results were very interesting.

The majority of students agreed that Math was red, English was blue, History was yellow, and Science was green. The other two subjects I asked about were P.E. and electives, but the answers varied a lot on those two subjects. The main debate was whether Math is red and English is blue, or Math is blue and English is red. Seven out of twelve students said that Math was red and English was blue, four of them said the opposite, and one said Math was orange and English was red.

There could be many different reasons behind these beliefs about subjects and their colors. Math could be seen as red because many people feel anger while doing math and frustration, emotions commonly represented as red. Others may see blue as Math because math makes sense to them and is easy for them, and blue is seen as a calming color, so it would correspond with understanding and simplicity. This means that what color you believe Math to be could likely be related to how easy it is for you and how you feel about math.
