Ukraine has struggled to compete against Russian violence since the Cold War. The most recent conflict, starting officially on Feb 24, 2022, had seemed to have Ukraine locked in a defensive war. Yet, on August 6, 2024, after being planned in secrecy, the Ukrainians invaded Russian controlled land. “Creating a buffer zone on the aggressor’s territory,” said by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, showing his goal of securing safety for his country. Ukraine’s military has displayed their goal themselves with their tactics, destroying all 3 bridges over the Seym River in the Kursk region, which was to cut off the flow of Russian forces back into the gained territory.
Many people question whether this incursion was worth it. The concern is that Ukraine is pulling valuable resources from other suffering fronts purely to invade Russian territory, yet it does seem to be working so far, as Ukraine has gained over 450 square miles of Russian territory, and 92 settlements, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday. A new current dispute between Ukraine and Russia just recently arose as well, with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claiming that Ukraine forces attempted a drone strike on the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), and seeking investigation through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Even though Ukraines forces have been seeming to glide through Russian territory, the finish line and “winners” are unclear. Yet, with the speed of which the new incursion is going, an end to this drawn out war seems far more reachable.
