On July 16, 2024, Marvel Studios’ latest superhero film Deadpool and Wolverine became the highest grossing R-Rated Film to date, beating out 2019’s Joker and 2023’s Oppenheimer. Deadpool and Wolverine is the third entry in the Deadpool trilogy and the film with the most pressure on its shoulders.
The film stars Ryan Reynolds as the comedic protagonist Deadpool and returning star Hugh Jackman as the long awaited return of the famous mutant, Wolverine. The film now takes place in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and has fans both ecstatic and worried for the upcoming release.
Fans were excited to finally see the hilarious dynamic pair on the silver screen side-by-side, especially after Disney bought 20th Century Fox, the original film studio responsible for bringing the characters to life.
Although fans were very intrigued about what events may occur in the film, they were also skeptical for the same reasons. In 2017, the movie said to end the storyline for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the Fox X-Men universe—Logan—was released. Both fans of the Wolverine character and fans of the Fox movies were inevitably satisfied.
While many were content with the way they ended Jackman’s run as Wolverine, they still wanted to see a return, but wanted it to be handled properly in a way that doesn’t affect the ending of Logan.
On September 27, 2022, Ryan Reynolds posted to his Youtube channel about an update on when fans would see Deadpool on the big screen again after the acquirement of 20th Century Fox by Walt Disney Studios. Near the end of the video, there was a quick glimpse of Hugh Jackman in the background as Reynolds asks, “Hey Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time? ” In which Jackman said: “Yeah, sure Ryan. ”
The video ends with the expected release date at the time. Overtime, the film had gotten its director in favor of award winning director, Shawn Levy. Immediately after he was on board with the project, both he and everyone else working on the movie promised they would not try to mess with any events that occurred in previously mentioned Logan, and want to, in fact, honor the legacy of the character instead.
As time passed, Marvel Studios has faced both big praise as well as backlash considering their latest films and tv shows released at the time. With their latest film The Marvels being both a financial and critical flop, fans had hoped that Deadpool and Wolverine would reignite the once big and bright spark that was Marvel Studios at its peak.
On the day of the film’s release, July 26, 2024, audiences praised the film for keeping the same maturity, humor, and heart as the last movies had in the trilogy, while also adding new elements to the formula.
Audiences and critics alike loved the film so much that the film sits at a 78% critically and a 95% by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the second highest rated film by Marvel and just barely tying with 2018’s, Black Panther. The film currently has made 1.086 billion dollars at the box office, making it now the highest grossing film with an R-Rating. The film passed expectations by many and is both a financial and critical success.
