The actress Blake Lively, who is well known for her role as Serena Vander Woodsen in Gossip Girl, is facing criticism from the public due to her insensitive attitude in the interviews promoting her new movie. All of this controversy is centered around the new film in theaters called, It Ends with Us, which is based on a novel by Colleen Hoover. This movie adaptation focuses on heavy topics such as domestic violence and abuse in romantic relationships.
Most recently in an interview, Lively was asked about how she would respond to a viewer who has faced abuse and might want to talk to her. She then answered in a sarcastic manner by saying, “Maybe asking for, like, my address, or my phone number. Or, like, location share?! I could just location-share you.” By answering in this way she dismisses real people who may be struggling with similar things depicted in this film.
Though she’s facing backlash, it’s not just the public who seems to be disagreeing with her approach towards promotion. The director Jason Baldoni is promoting this movie in his own way. He speaks about the film in a way that lets people know it’s about abuse instead of misleading them by saying to “wear your florals and bring your friends,” which is something Lively said while trying to promote this movie. His approach towards promoting his movie seems to have left him alienated from Colleen Hoover and his fellow cast members. Overall, there is a lot of tension between the two co-stars because of their different viewpoints that stems from the abuse that takes place in this film. It is important for them to listen to survivors of domestic violence who the movie was initially made for.
Although it may be obvious to us viewers that this movie should be about sharing the stories of victims, Blake Lively has taken it as a way to promote her own business. For example, her new hair care line, which she seems to talk about in the interviews for this movie more than the movie itself. Blake Lively needs to take into account how her actions as a lead actress in this movie may be affecting her viewers.
