From August 19th to August 22nd, the Democratic National Convention, or DNC, took place in Chicago, Illinois. The Democratic National Convention and Republican National Convention serve as opportunities for like-minded politicians in the same party to get together and speak about their campaigns, as well as their endorsements for their party’s presidential nominee.
Though not common, crossover between parties is possible, such as what happened at this year’s DNC with people such as Former White House Press Secretary, Stephanie Grisam, Mesa, Arizona Mayor John Giles, Former Pence adviser, Olivia Troye, Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, and Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger. These five people have made history by speaking out against former President Donald Trump, and some of the acts he committed whilst in office, and out.
Former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham starts her speech by stating how, “The Trump family became my family.” Grisham states soon afterwards that, even though she was his closest advisor, that she was upset about how he mocks his supporters, with him going as far as calling them “Basement Dwellers.” According to Grisham, he has no morals, and no fidelity to the truth. She further addresses issues that she’s had with both Donald and Melania Trump, and how, even though she may be a Republican, she is an American who wants the best for America.
John Giles is a lifelong Republican, and addresses that at the very start of his speech. Giles continues by calling out the whole Republican party, saying that it’s fallen victim to “The cult of Donald Trump.” Aside from Giles calling Trump a child, he does go on to state the claims that Trump originally promised the United States. He also stated that he needs to put his country over his party, and will be supporting Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election.
Former Pence adviser Olivia Troye starts off her speech by declaring why she quit her position in the white house, something she has wanted her entire life. Troye goes on to state how Trump continues to lie over and over, and how he’s setting the groundwork for undermining the election. Troye brings up a good point when she says that our foreign adversaries are wanting Trump to win, because then they would win. In the past, leaders such as Xi Jinping of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia, and Kim Jong Un of North Korea all have had good relationships with Trump. Relationships where good is apparently being able to compliment, and ‘butter up’ the president in order to manipulate him to their will.
Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan begins his speech with an outline about how the journey to his podium at the DNC started. Though he is a Republican, he’s speaking out about Trump and his administration’s lying, and how it poses a threat to democracy itself. He goes on to say how these actions should prevent him from ever stepping foot into the oval office again. Duncan then addresses his party directly, saying that “Our party is not civil or conservative, it’s chaotic and crazy. The only thing left to do is Dump Trump.” He continues by saying that the Republican party is a cult that worships a felonist thug. Though he addresses the fact that he doesn’t agree with Kamala in every standing, he still states that he thinks Kamala knows right from wrong, and good versus evil. He addresses his party again, specifically to people at home, saying, “You’re not a Democrat if you vote for Kamala Harris, you’re a patriot.”
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger has been speaking out against Trump as he tried to overturn the election in 2020. He starts by saying how he wants to defend democracy, the truth, and decency in America. He then states how he doesn’t see the democrats as socialists, or communists, but just as patriotic as Republicans. Kinzinger also goes on to say how the Republican party is no longer conservative, and has switched its allegiance from patriots, to a man. He goes on a whole spiel about how Trump is just an act, and how behind the act, he is nothing but a small man.
These Republicans are speaking out against a potentially dangerous organization which may get them into trouble, which further shows how important this is to them, to other Republicans, and to you.
