Concord Shuts Down

By Jacob Oliveira

Concord released August 23rd to an abysmal launch. In 6 days the game has only peaked at 697 players and has dropped down to below 200 players. After 8 years of development and a 150 million dollar budget, you’d expect a grander release with a far larger player count.

The genre itself is already a dying series. The biggest name in the genre, Overwatch, only has 37,000 players, and other games in the genre aren’t doing any better. Other genres such as soulslike or FPS shooters are far more popular, but big companies continue to harp on what was and try and continue to milk a genre with a player base that continues to dwindle.

After only 10 days the game has announced that it is closing down and will be issuing refunds to consumers. September 6, 2024, will be the last day you will be able to play and purchase Concord. Although PlayStation has a show called Secret Level with a Concord episode, the game will be long dead by the time the show is released. After all this you have to wonder what the point was. They knew there was no interest in the game and after a week they just decided to shut down. Concord was a complete waste of time and money for not only the companies but for the consumers. Even Sony recognizes this and has decided to refund and try to forget about this ever being released. Hopefully this marks the end of the genre for a while until the genre becomes less saturated and more unique and interesting. But until then, these games will continue to flop without big franchises gathering interest for the games. At the end of the day, Concord has too many cons.
