Five Older Games That Are Worth Another Playthrough

By Reed Richards

Gaming is getting worse and worse every year with million dollar projects flopping into nothingness every couple months. (Looking at you, Concord.) People online have the audacity to say gaming has become boring because of the yearly COD releases or boring copy and paste sports games that are not satisfying enough. You can’t trust current Triple A Studios now, but you could have in the past. Every game coming out a few years ago was exciting, had hype and people waiting for them, lining up in the streets to get a copy from Gamestop or Target. Nowadays, it’s sad when a game is bad and it’s expected and when a game is good it’s only okay at best. Now with these sad releases, gamers want something good to play to stave off the boredom. If you’re like them, and you need some good games to play, I got 5 older games that will give you a better gaming experience than any of the recent Triple A games.

Skyrim: Now, if you have been around for a little while you probably have heard of this game. Skyrim was released on November 11, 2011, developed by Bethesda Game Studios as another installment in the Elder Scrolls series following the 2006 game Oblivion, which is famous for its very dry, simple dialogue. I played Skyrim for the first time this year and believe me when I tell you that I was addicted to it for months. The game takes place on the continent of Tamriel, which is a beautiful place full of danger, dungeons, dragons, swords and sorcery—plus many things to discover within the vast lands of this war torn continent. If you have not played this game, go and pick yourself up a copy on steam for the low, low price of $40.

Cave Story: If you like Metroidvania type games, this one is the one for you. Cave Story is a 2D platform shooter puzzle game, developed independently by Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya. It was released on December 20th, 2004. I love this game very much. The art is wonderful, and the music is even better because it really makes you feel the environment of the game. You play as a little robot guy who wakes up in a cave, and the rest is history. Honestly, it’s been a long time since I have played this indie gem of a game, but from my memory it’s one of the most fun and interesting games I’ve played. You can pick up this game on steam for $15.

A Hat In Time: Where do I even start? A Hat In Time is a “cute as heck” 3D indie platform game, released on October 5th, 2017, developed by the Danish indie game company Gears For Breakfast. This is my favorite game of all time—hands down. The main character, Hat Kid, is the cutest protagonist in any game I have ever played, the music is top 1 on my list, the platforming is fun, and the game is rewarding and quite challenging simultaneously. I don’t want to spoil a lot, but if I was to recommend any game on this list, this one is the one I would recommend the most. You can pick up this game on steam for $30, and it’s well worth it.

Minecraft: You’re probably wondering, “Why is Minecraft here?” Well, if you didn’t know, Minecraft is 13 years old, but it really does not show its age. Minecraft is a timeless game developed by Mojang Studios, but I imagine that most everyone has heard or played it at some point in their life. Many have made videos of why Minecraft isn’t fun anymore, but they forget that Minecraft is not a linear game. All they do is beat the ender dragon and that’s it, but there’s much more to Minecraft. Even if you spend thousands of hours in this timeless game, just try a single-player world for a few weeks—you’ll understand.

Celeste: Celeste is a 2D pixel platformer released in 2018, which might not seem super old but was 6 years ago. Celeste is very hard compared to other platforming games, like Mario, because it has a very tight platform and has a multitude of hidden mechanics that make the speed runs very fun to watch. The main plot is about the main character Madaline climbing up Celeste Mountain to cure her depression (oversimplification), and the game explores very heavy themes that resonate with a lot of people. This is a great find you can buy on steam for around $20 dollars.
