This year had a lot of promising movies coming our way, and a lot of them delivered. However, many of them did not. Nevertheless, this year was a very exciting year for movie fans, and the 2024 box office was an overall success.
First, let’s talk about the successful movies for this year, starting with Inside Out 2. Inside Out 2 was the highest grossing film of the year, with an overwhelming 1.7 billion dollars in the worldwide box office. We all had that nostalgic feeling when we watched the first Inside Out, and the second movie brought back that feeling for many fans. The animation combined with the music provided a joyful tear-jerker, along with a great story. Lately, Disney hasn’t been performing that well when it comes to new movies, but this year they have really stepped up their game.
In 1984, the first Dune movie was released. This movie wasn’t great, and most people have never seen it. The origin of the creation of Dune was done so in a novel by Frank Herbert in 1965. Then, several decades later, the Dune remake was released in 2021. The first Dune movie was an overall success, but it’s Dune Part 2 that’s worth talking about. Dune Part 2 was one of the earlier movies released this year, but still one of the most successful. The film reached over 700 million dollars in the worldwide box office. The success of the movie is mainly due to the novel, since it was one of the most influential works in science fiction. It also helps that the first movie was successful.
Although Disney stepped up their game this year, not all big budget productions were as lucky. Madame Web, from Sony, was one of the biggest disappointments of the year, only reaching 100 million dollars in the worldwide box office. Now this might not sound bad, but you have to remember this is Sony we’re talking about, and they spent over 80 million dollars just to make the movie. This movie tried so hard to be a Spider-man movie, but it ultimately just ruined any excitement anyone had for upcoming Spider-man films. There is little Madame Web isn’t lacking; there’s poor dialogue, non-existent character development, and a lackluster villain. Overall, this movie is an embarrassment for superhero cinema, and it’s unlikely to be a movie anyone looks back on or remembers in the future.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, I would spend most of my time playing Borderlands 3. It used to be my favorite game, so you can tell why I would be excited when I heard they were making a Borderlands movie. My excitement came to a devastating end, and so did everyone else’s, when it came to watching the movie. Every single person who watched the Borderlands movie not only wasted their money, but their time as well. This movie just didn’t live up to any expectations anyone had for it, and the story was more than disappointing. The movie only reached 30 million dollars worldwide, and cost over 100 million to produce.
I don’t want to end on a disappointment, so instead I’ll end on a movie people really enjoyed. Horror movies don’t typically reach too high in the box office, but this one blew people away. Longlegs became Neon’s (The films distributor) highest grossing film. Horror movies like this usually don’t do very well in the box office, so people were surprised to see this film be as successful as it was. This is a film with such a small production company, and one that only took 10 million dollars to make, so receiving over 100 million dollars in the worldwide box office is pretty great.
Overall, 2024 was a great year for films, and there were a lot more exciting movies that I didn’t get the chance to talk about. I’m excited to see what the rest of 2024 holds for films, as well as 2025.
