Family blog channels are a popular watch amongst the YouTube community. People seem to love watching rich families and their day-to-day lives. A majority of these channels are even targeted towards a younger audience. Should we expose children to a life they want but can’t have? Or are these family lives amazing until you look behind closed doors?
One big example of this family blog phenomenon is The Norris Nuts. This channel may appear family friendly at first, but digging deeper into it, it would appear otherwise. Throughout videos of The Norris Nuts the children do challenges, a day in the life, gaming, and other types of videos. However, throughout these videos the only source of these children’s education is their home schooling.
Looking through videos of these kids it is clear they might not be getting the education they deserve or need. The picture above shows one of the children’s handwriting from 6 months ago. That child is 13 years old. Along with the poor education, scrolling through the channel will show years of uploaded videos about the children’s medical history and doctors appointments. All are documented for the world to be able to see. These videos include “SHE WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL…” with a picture of their daughter in a hospital room. They have also done things such as choosing their newborn baby’s name from random out of a hat. “WE CHOOSE OUR BABY’S NAME OUT OF A HAT w/ The Norris Nuts”. The Norris Nuts aren’t the only ones to be gaining fame and fortune off of their family life however. The LaBrant Fam is just another example of using family to your advantage.
The LaBrant Fam uploads videos in the hospital as well. “Meeting Our Son for The First Time (live birth)” Throughout the entire video is included the epidural process along with the other steps of giving birth. For a family channel, this isn’t something that is needed to be shared or should be watched by a younger audience. Just like The Norris Nuts, there are multiple accounts of children and adults being filmed in the hospital. When do these channels go too far to be shown? Should everything that these families experience be publicized to the entire world?
When does using your children for fortune, fame, money, and popularity become abuse or mistreatment compared to fun and family bonding? When is that line crossed and should it be legal? Should young children be allowed to be exposed in some of their most vulnerable states including in the hospital?
